An avid hockey player, coach, and fan, Mr. Lafond was born and raised on the
Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. After graduation, he went to work as a high school Native
Studies and History teacher in Saskatoon. Keenly interested in Canadian business
and politics, he became a special assistant to the federal minister of Indian
and Northern Affairs and served as President of the Canada Council for Aboriginal
Business in Toronto. From 1995-2002, he served as elected Chief of the Saskatoon
Tribal Council. He was appointed Special Advisor to the President on Aboriginal
Initiatives at the U of S in 2003, and has led a number of initiatives designed
to create a strong sense of place for Aboriginal students on campus.
