Dr. Thiessens intimate knowledge of the structure of the Canadian financial system
has contributed to its evolution as one of the safest and soundest in the world.
A former member of the University s Board of Governor s, he started his career
at the Bank of Canada in 1963. In 1979, he was appointed Adviser to the Governor
and later Senior Deputy Governor. In 1994, he was appointed Governor of the
Bank of Canada. Leading Canada through seven of the most financially turbulent
years in its history, he succeeded in setting monetary policies that wrestled
inflation to the ground and helped return the economy to robust health.
