Dr. Townsend has made considerable contributions to the advancement of veterinary medicine and vaccine development and efficacy. A well-respected faculty member at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and a researcher at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease organization (VIDO), he is perhaps best known for his pioneering work in the treatment of equine influenza, which is a highly contagious and widespread viral upper-respiratory illness in horses.
