Lorne Calvert was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After studying economics at the University of Regina and theology at the University of Saskatchewan, he was ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1976 and served a number of congregations throughout Saskatchewan. He was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1986, and would go on serve as a Cabinet Minister from 1992 until 1998 in the New Democratic Party government. He held a number of portfolios, including Minister Responsible for SaskPower and SaskEnergy, Minister of Health, and Minister of Social Services. Mr. Calvert assumed the duties of Premier in 2001.
