A Canadian cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Heimbecker created medical history when he performed the world s first complete heart valve transplant in 1962 and Canadas first modern heart transplant in 1981. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the U of S, he went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto in 1947 where he joined the University s Department of Surgery in 1955. A consultant, professor, and pre eminent surgeon, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997 for being at the forefront of his specialty.
