Report No. 1/97

A Bibliography of Agricultural Energy Use Prepared For Natural Resources Canada and Saskatchewan Energy and Mines.  By Mohammad Khakbazan and Andre Hucq. October 1997, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

About the Canadian Agriculture Energy End-Use Data and Analysis Centre...

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announced the creation of the National Energy Use Database (NEUD) initiative in October 1991. This program, under the umbrella of the Green plan, aims to reduce green house gas emissions by improving energy efficiency in all sectors of the economy. To achieve this objective, the NEUD initiative gave priority to expanding and improving the existing knowledge about energy consumption and efficiency at the end-use level in all sectors of the economy.

The Canadian Agricultural Energy End-Use Data and Analysis Centre (CAEEDAC) was established in the Department of Agriculture Economics at the University of Saskatchewan in May 1994 to accomplish this task for the agricultural sector. CAEEDAC is part of a network of Energy Use Data and Analysis centres across Canada. Other centres are established at Universite Laval (transportation), Simon Fraser University (industrial), McMaster University (commercial), and Technical University of Nova Scotia (residential).

Research conducted in the Centre in the 1996-97 fiscal year was sponsored by NRCan, Saskatchewan Energy and Mines, Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture and Food, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, SaskPower, and SaskEnergy. Each sponsoring agency has a chair in the Centre's Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee reviews the progress of work done, and provides input to the future work plans of the Centre.

Introduction

Preparing an inventory of information on agricultural energy use was one of the requirements in CAEEDAC's 1996/97 contract. CAEEDAC staff conducted searches for two types of information; a search for statistical data and a search for publications and unpublished working papers pertinent to agricultural energy use. This report provides a bibliography of published and unpublished studies on agricultural energy use. The search for information on both types is an on-going process and this report should not be viewed as a complete list of the literature available on agricultural energy use. In an area that is of interest to an interdisciplinary group of researchers and policy makers, constant change and expansion is taking place. Some omissions are therefore inevitable. This report is a continuation of the first report that was published in 1995 as CAEEDAC Report No. 3/95.
