Mr. Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I present to you Stanley A. Barber, Professor of Agronomy, Purdue University West, Lafayette, Indiana.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Stanley Barber was born at Wolseley, Saskatchewan. He took his public schooling and three years of high school through correspondence at Westfield School, a small rural school near the home farm. He graduated with a B.S.A. and M.Sc. in 1945 and 1947 respectively, from the University of Saskatchewan. As a part of his research program which was supervised by Drs. J.W.T. Spinks and J. Mitchell, the first radioactive-P field fertilizer experiment in the world was set out on the Agar farm near Floral. This experiment, which was highly successful, stimulated world-wide interest in isotope dilution technology and showed the role that radio-isotopes could play in evaluating fertilizer nutrient management practices. The results of thousands of similar experiments both here and elsewhere have led to dramatic improvements in fertilizer management practices, the dollar value of which is enormous.
Stan Barber obtained his Ph.D. degree in Soil Chemistry from the University of Missouri in 1949, and has been with the Agronomy Department, Purdue University, since that time. He and his wife, Marion, have two daughters, Darlene and Rebecca.
Dr. Stanley Barber has had a distinguished research career that has resulted in major breakthroughs in knowledge of soil fertility and plant nutrition.
May I dwell just a moment on a few of the several awards that Dr. Barber has received for excellence in Soil Research. He has been made a Fellow of the Indiana Academy of Science, the American Society of Agronomy, and the Soil Science Society of America. He was a recipient of the Soil Science Society of America's Science Award given to the person making the greatest contribution to Soil Science in any one year, and more recently the Bouyoucos Soil Scientist Distinguished Career Award. He has received the American Society of Agronomy's Agronomic Research Award and the Agronomic Achievement Award.
Dr. Barber's contributions in the research area have been paralleled by his contribution as an educator. He has shared his insights and knowledge with staff and students throughout North America, and indeed the world, in his many invited seminars and lectures. At last count he had given 55 international invitational lectures in 20 countries.
Dr. Barber has served as advisor to over 50 graduate students and more than 20 post-doctoral students during his career at Purdue. It is hardly possible to go to any North American Agronomy or Soils Department without encountering one of Dr. Barber's former graduate students. His recent book "Soil Nutrient Bio-availability" published in 1984, not only serves as a basic text for courses he gives at Purdue, and for many other universities around the world.
We in the College of Agriculture are particularly delighted that the University has chosen to honor Dr. Barber during the College's 75th Diamond Jubilee Year.
