Richard Ehman, a native of Saskatchewan, graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with High Honours in Physics in 1974 and Great Distinction in Medicine in 1979. From 1979 to 1983 he completed his internship and residency through the University of Calgary at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.Degree received: Doctor of Science
Dr. Ehman achieved honours and awards throughout his scholastic and professional career. He was the recipient of the Canadian Governor General’s Medal in 1970; the Homer Pediatrics Medal in 1979; the Alberta Heritage Foundation Research Fellowship in 1983; the Editor’s Recognition Award, Radiology in 1986 and 1987; the RSNA Scholar Award from 1989-1991; and a Gold Medal Award, Society of Magnetic Resonance in 1995. He was named a Fellow of the Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in 1993.
Dr. Ehman also maintains clinical duties and has refereed more than one hundred publications in just sixteen years. He has served on the following editorial boards: Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography from 1988-95; Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging from 1990-93; Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine from 1990-95; Radiology since 1988; Magnetic Resonance Quarterly since 1991; Computer Aided Surgery since 1994. From 1990-93 he was an external consultant for the S-W Imaging Research Institute, Canada. He has been Associate Editor of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine since 1991; the Chair of the Subcommittee on MR Nomenclature, Committee on Research and Technology Assessment, American College of Radiology since 1994; and a member of NIH Diagnostic Radiology Study Section since 1995. In 1997, Dr. Ehman spoke to the graduating class in Medicine and delivered the Third Annual Chuck Childers’ Lecture.
Dr. Ehman’s most significant industrial contribution is the “Spatial Presaturation” sequence, licensed for use on every MRI instrument worldwide. In other patents, he has combined physical principles to clinical applications to reduce MR motion artifacts, to image synchronous motion, to measure strain waves, and to use navigator echoes as a measure of motion during image acquisition.
Dr. Richard Ehman is married to Dr. Margaret Houston. They have three children.
