Discipline / contribution: agriculture ; international service; public service
Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, it gives me much pleasure to reintroduce a gentleman formerly of the faculties of Engineering and Agriculture, who was a familiar figure on this platform for more than 30 years. During his long service to this University and to farmers in this province, Saskatchewan agriculture passed from horse power to tractor power and became almost fully mechanized. During this radical revolution in farming methods no man in the service of agriculture was more personally involved than Professor Hardy. The farmers of this province will long remember his patient and untiring efforts to demonstrate how various new implements should be adjusted and operated to function properly. His degree classes contributed to the qualifications of an extraordinary number of students who have held positions of responsibility in industry. The short courses and field demonstrations which he conducted for farmers taught them to operate tractors and power equipment efficiently. Machine companies profited from his practical suggestions and oil companies followed eagerly his researches on principles of lubrication.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
For the past six years Professor Hardy has been closely identified with agricultural development in Ceylon. On resigning from the University in l952 he became farm mechanics expert for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In this capacity he was assigned as Technical Assistance Officer to Ceylon, where his services are still in much demand. In Ceylon he has been duplicating the services which he rendered to the farmers of this country, including the preparation of courses in far mechanics and participation in a teaching program in a new Technical Institute recently established by the Government of that Country.
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, I ask that you confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on Evan A. Hardy.
