I present to you a distinguished scientist and educator, Walter Palmer Thompson. After receiving his early training at the University of Toronto and Harvard University, Dr. Thompson came to the University of Saskatchewan in 1913 as Professor of Biology and was successively Head of the Department of Biology, Dean of the Junior Colleges, Dean of Arts and Science, and President of the University. His researches in the development of rust resistant wheats and his fundamental work in genetics are internationally known and have brought him many honors. He was President of the Royal Society of Canada, President of the National Conference of Canadian Universities, a member of the National Research Council, President of the Ninth International Botanical Congress. He has received the Flavelle Medal of the Royal Society for his outstanding contributions to the Biological Sciences.
Numerous universities have recognized his outstanding skill and wisdom as an educator by awarding him honorary degrees. The tremendous development of the University during the last decade and the high morale of the staff during his tenure of office, are eloquent witnesses to his skill and understanding as a university administrator.
Eminent Chancellor, I ask that you confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law on Walter Palmer Thompson, President Emeritus of the University of Saskatchewan.
