Eminent Chancellor, I present to you Mr. William John Finley Warren.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Mr. Warren was born near Perth, Ontario and settled at Balbeck, Saskatchewan in 1906. This was the first step toward the development of Balbeck Farm. In 1911, Miss James of Perth, joined this enterprise, as Mrs. Warren.
In 1917 Mr. Warren came to this University and enrolled in the Associate Course. He received his Diploma in 1919, but returned to take another year of special studies.
He soon became prominent as a producer and exhibitor of registered seed and an active member of both provincial and national Seed Growers Associations. He is a Past-President of the Saskatchewan Registered Seed Grower's Association.
Mr. Warren was just as successful with his Aberdeen-Angus cattle and won a grand championship at both the Toronto Royal and the Chicago International.
Belbeck Farm is a place of beauty. Its garden is famous for its vegetables, fruits, and flowers and the latter are donated generously to hospitals and other institutions throughout the area, and particularly in the city of Moose Jaw.
In addition to all his activities as a successful farmer and exhibitor, Mr. Warren found time for community and provincial service. For many years he coached teams for the Farm Boys' Camp. In its early days he joined the Moose Jaw Agricultural Society and served as its President. He is still secretary. He was President of the Saskatchewan Agricultural Societies' Association in 1940; was re-elected in 1941, and made an Honorary Life Member in 1944.
His popularity was further attested to in 1921 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the constituency of Thunder Creek.
His sterling character and his qualities of leadership are an inspiration to all who know him.
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I ask that you confer on Mr. Warren the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
