Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellors I present to you a man who wears the mantle of fatherhood with particular grace and esteem. He is a father, a grandfather and, in this country, has become known as the father of hospital administration.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
For nearly thirty years he has devoted himself to the cause of greater hospital efficiency and improved patient care. As a young practising physician he became Associate Secretary of the Canadian Medical Association in the Department of Hospital Service. In 1931 he was one of the originators of the Canadian Hospital Council which as a result of his leadership, became the national hospital association for Canada. In 1949 he relinquished these reins to devote his talents to the academic field and to consultant practice in hospital planning and organization.
During his brilliant career he has gained friendship and respect both nationally and internationally. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Hospital Administrators, he has served as President of the American Hospital Association, of the American Association of Hospital Consultants, of the Royal Canadian Institute and of the Ontario Hospital Association. In l952 the Canadian Hospital Association conferred on him their highest honour for service in the hospital field — the George Finley Stevens Memorial Award.
As a scholar, Dr. Agnew has been notable since his medical student years when he was elected to an honourary scholastic fraternity. He was instrumental in establishing the course in Hospital Administration at the University of Toronto and became professor of the department at its inception — a post he still holds with great distinction. He has been president of the Association of University programs in Hospital Administration and is the author of many papers in the hospital, medical and related scientific fields.
As an artist of proven ability, he has been president of the American Physicians’ Art Association and has captured awards of merit for his work on numerous occasions.
By his outstanding ability, by his ambassadorial qualities and by his devotion to humanitarian objectives, he has brought credit to himself, to the hospital field and to his country.
Eminent Chancellors for the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, I present George Harvey Agnew, Professor of Hospital Administration at the University of Toronto.
