The University of Saskatchewan's Master of Fine Arts program offers artists the opportunity to develop a practical and theoretical understanding of their art practice in the context of a challenging and supportive faculty of studio artists, art historians and art educations.

Students may specialize in the areas of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography and inter-media.

The program is normally two years in length with a total of eight students enrolled at any given time. Candidates in the MFA program come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have varying degrees of experience and engagement in the wider arts community .

Admissions

Application should be made no later than February 1 for entrance in the term beginning the fall of that year.

Candidates must have a BFA degree, or its equivalent, with acceptable standing upon entrance to the program. When applying for admission, students must write to the Chair, Graduate Committee, Department of Art & Art History. Applications are available u pon request.

Applicants must have, as part of their application, a statement of intent and a proposed area of research or study, 20 slides of previous work and three letters of recommendation. If the application package is incomplete, the candidate will not be considered.

Applications are reviewed by the entire faculty of the Department. Four candidates are selected annually; a short list is kept in the event that an accepted student declines the Department's offer.

Funding

Financial assistance is available in the form of scholarships, graduate teaching fellowships (GTFs) and paid lab assistantships.

The number of scholarships awarded to graduate students varies from year to year, although in recent years, we have received two scholarships and two GTFs annually. Scholarships are usually awarded to students going into their second year; GTFs and lab a ssistantships are held by both first- and second-year students. A student must have a minimum GPA of 80% to be considered for scholarship or GTF support.

Students receiving scholarships and GTFs are expected to contribute to the Department through teaching or other assigned duties.
