Current Graduate & Undergraduate Students
Shaun Dergousoff (PhD student)
Shaun is using a combination of molecular techniques to examine fundamental questions relating to the ticks, Dermacentor variabilis and D. andersoni, and the bacteria (pathogenic and endosymbionts) they habour.
Clare Anstead (PhD student)
Clare is examining questions relating to the ticks (Ixodes spp.) and bacteria from pocket gophers, ground squirrels and other small mammals (shrews, voles, mice, etc.). Clare previously conducted a research project in my lab as part of her undergraduate degree (BIOL 481.6).
Chantel Krakowetz (PhD student)
Chantel is comparing the population genetics of black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and their pathogenic and enodsymbiotic bacteria from the established populations in Canada. Chantel had previously worked in my lab on ticks for two summers (2007 & 2008) as an NSERC USRA and conducted a research project as part of her undergraduate degree (BIOL 481.6).
Katie Sim (Research Assistant)
Katie is working on the tick and tick-borne disease surveilance program. She has conducted research in my lab previously as a undergraduate student (NSERC USRA and BIOL 480.3) working on several projects including the genetic characertization of parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes, and the population genetics of Dermacentor albipictus.
Anish Mann (NSERC USRA 2010)
Anish is determining the magnitude of genetic variation among populations of Dermacentor variabilis.
---------------- Former Students (at the U of S) ------------------
Tina Giroux (MSc, 2008)

Tina conducted her MSc research project on the population genetics and phylogeography of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Saskatchewan. Tina was cosupervised by Prof. Doug Chivers.
Raymond Ko (BIOL 481.6, 2008-2009)
Ray examined the use of microsatellites for population genetics studies on ticks.
Tyler Little (Biol 481.6, 2008-2009)
Tyler examined the ecology of parasitic water mites on waterboatmen from different populations around Saskatoon.
Ian Patterson (Biol 481.6, 2007-2008)
Ian used molecular tools to compare the genetic variation in two populations of the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni.
Lorilee Flavelle (Biol 480.3, 2005)
Lorilee used molecular tools to determine the species identity of L1's [first-stage larvae] of two species of elaphostrongyline nematode.
Cyndi Laduke (Summer Student, 2009)
Andrew Gajadhar (Summer student 2005-2007)
