Snow geese nesting on Banks Island are of great importance to
the Inuvialuit. These birds make up an important part in local
diets and are harvested by 5 of the 6 communities in the
Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Any significant change in the number
of geese nesting on Banks Island could therefore greatly alter the
availability of geese for local harvest.
-
Except for McEwen's work in 1955 very little is known about the
productivity of lesser snow geese at Banks Island.
-
This study was initiated in 1995 to collect baseline information on productivity
of snow geese on Banks Island. This information may be used for managing this
population in an enlightened manner.
