Stay Safe

This is an outline of some of the things that you can do to actively reduce your risk of being drugged and/or sexually assaulted. These ideas can be easily applied to going to either a bar or to a house party.

  • Plan Ahead, make sure you know where you’re going, who your going with and always plan a safe ride home – taxi or designated driver.
  • Use the Buddy System, make sure someone you trust and have known for a long time goes with you and plan to stick together.
  • Drink Responsibly, know your limit. ALSO, If someone wants to buy you a drink accompany him or her to the bar and watch it being poured yourself.
  • Never Leave Your Drink Unattended, even to go to the bathroom, make a phone call, or go dancing.
  • Do Not, drink anything that tastes unusual or appears “funny”, date rape drugs can be mixed with ANY liquid.
  • Absolutely Trust Your Instincts!!! If the way a person behaves makes you uncomfortable or a situation doesn’t feel right, there’s probably something wrong, trust your instincts. Never think that it won't happen to you!
  • Tips for safety don’t only apply to women, men are also at risk from date rape drugs and sexual assault.

Realize that sexual assault is a crime of opportunity where the assailant is looking for a vulnerable victim - that may be someone who is drunk, drugged, separated from friends, overly trusting, etc.
