Health Sciences Building Cardiovascular Research Group

At the heart of biomedical research, there is the CVRG

Welcome to CVRG, the home of transdiciplinary cardiovascular research at the University of Saskatchewan.

The Cardiovascular Research Group (CVRG) was established in 2003 with the mission of fostering excellence in cardiovascular research by facilitating activity and collaboration among cardiovascular researchers at the University of Saskatchewan along the common theme of “integrated translational cardiovascular research from bench to bedside”. The research interesting of the members of CVRG, currently numbering 20 scientists from College of Medicine,  Veterinary Medicine,  Pharmacy and Nutrition, and  Agriculture and Bioresources, and  the School of Public Health, span multiple CIHR pillars (basic research, clinical research and community health). This makes the CVRG truly transdisciplinary nature.

Over the past 5 years, the CVRG has enjoyed a significant growth in its research activity.  Trainee numbers have increased from 27 in 2004 to 40 in 2008, and external funding, primarily from the Tri-Councils, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation but also from Provincial and local funding agencies, has increased from $2.6 million for 2004, 2005 and 2006, to $3.1 million for 2007 and 2008. CVRG members have also received a number of personal awards from National and local funding agencies such as investigator and new investigator awards, post-doctoral fellowships and graduate studentships.  Since its inception, CVRG members have published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles.

The establishment of CVRG has greatly enhanced the research activities of individual researchers and the cardiovascular research as a whole at the University of Saskatchewan. A CIHR/Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada supported Strategic Training program – Gasotransmitter REsearch And Training (GREAT) has been awarded to the members of CVRG to train graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. This six-year grant (2003-2009) provides a total of $1.8 million with an additional $0.2 million of match fund and in-kind contribution. CVRG had also been awarded a 2-year Research Group Establishment grant by Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation with a total fund of $100,000 (including match fund) in 2003. CVRG is looking forward to promoting collaborative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on the regulation of cardiovascular structure and function among researchers at the University of Saskatchewan; to building capacity in cardiovascular research through training and recruitment; and to promoting and advancing cardiovascular wellness.

On this website, you will find valuable information on our group research initiatives, seminars and journal clubs, as well as research interests of individual CVRG members and laboratories.  Newly opened positions for faculty and trainees are also frequently posted.  Thank you for your continuing interests in and support of CVRG in its quest to improve cardiovascular health of Saskatchewan people and beyond.  I also invite your feedback and thought, and will be delighted to provide further information on CVRG to you.  Please your collaboration.
