Graduate Pathways Certificate

Graduate Pathways Certificate

The Graduate Pathways Certificate (GPC) program is a non-credit certificate program for graduate student applicants who are academically qualified, but who do not meet the minimum English proficiency requirements for their graduate program.  For students with a conditional admission to most graduate programs, the GPC is an option to study academic English at the University of Saskatchewan and move directly into their graduate program. Registration and satisfactory progress in the GPC will be a required component of their academic study.

Program Description

The GPC program consists of the following four courses:

  1. EAP 40 - High-Intermediate Level
  2. EAP 50 - U-PREPARATION 1
  3. EAP 60 - U-PREPARATION 2
  4. GSR 981: Canadian Academic Acculturation and Literacy for International Graduate Students

These courses must be completed in succession; however, depending on proficiency deemed at the point of entry, students may be given credit for EAP 40 and EAP 50.  The GPC, while establishing a foundation for students to be successful in graduate studies, does not count towards a student’s time in program.

Students with a conditional admission to a graduate program must have successfully completed the second course in the certificate program (EAP 50) and be undertaking the third course (EAP 60) before they may register in any other graduate course. With the approval of their academic supervisor and the Director of the U of S Language Centre, these students may enroll in up to 6 credit units of discipline specific course work.

Successful completion of EAP 60 is required before students are considered fully-qualified for English proficiency and can begin a full academic course load in a graduate program.

Minimum Admission Requirements

For graduate studies applicants who are also applying to the Graduate Pathways Certificate program, the following minimum English proficiency standards will apply.

Students who wish to apply for the GPC program must have a valid TOEFL IBT or IELTS test at the time of application. Only these two tests will be accepted for GPC admission.

Those students who start the GPC certificate program at EAP 40 can expect to take up to twelve months to complete the certificate. Students who start at EAP 50 or EAP 60 will typically take less time to complete the certificate program. Your starting level will be determined at the time of admission into the GPC program by the assessment officer at the University of Saskatchewan Language Centre.

Students interested in the GPC should first discuss this option with their potential supervisor and the department of their chosen graduate program as not all gradaute programs accept students through the GPC.  If you have not yet chosen a graduate program, please review the information at Step-by-Step Apply
