Xi’an Jiaotong University & UofS Dual Degree in Sociology

Last week the University of Saskatchewan renewed the agreement with Xi’an Jiaotong University in Xi’an China for a dual master’s of sociology degree. On hand representing the UofS was Dean Lawrence Martz from the College of Graduate Studies, Associate Dean Harley Dickinson from the College of Arts and Science.

Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), with approximately 32,000 students, is a major comprehensive university in China and is ranked among its top ten institutions. In 2007, the University of Saskatchewan and XJTU piloted an innovative master’s program, which has enabled both Canadian and Chinese students to study at both partner institutions and receive two degrees. The first three graduates from the program, one student initially from the UofS and two students initially from XJTU, have successfully defended their thesis and gone on to further studies and employment.

With the renewal of the agreement, Dr. Li Zong anticipates that the number of students enrolled in the dual masters degree of sociology program will grow over the next five years. For further information on the program, students are invited to contact Dr. Zong (li.zong@usask.ca) or Patience Elabor-Idemudia, (patience.elabor-idemudia@usask.ca) who is the Graduate Chair in the Department of Sociology.
