U of S-China Doctoral Scholar Partnership Agreements

Six top tier Chinese universities have agreed to partner with the College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR) to provide graduate study opportunities to twenty Ph.D. students who have successfully competed for a scholarship from the Chinese government to study abroad. A delegation led by Dean Lawrence Martz recently returned from China, where they undertook a series of consultations and campus visits with current and potential partnering universities. As a result Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed, or agreed to in principle, with three long standing CGST partners - Beijing Institute of Technology (Beijing), Jilin University (Changchun), and Xi'an Jiaotong University (Xi/an), and with three new partners - Northwestern Agrictulture and Forest University (Yangling), Northwestern Polytechnical University (Xi'an), and Northeastern Normal University (Changchun).

These MOUs provide the framework for the establishment of the U of S-China Doctoral Scholar Partnership program. Partnering Chinese universities have committed to recruit and recommend Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) approved Ph.D. students to the U of S for their doctoral studies. The CGSR, in collaboration with academic units, will provide up to twenty (20) tuition scholarships, and an additional $4,000 to-up scholarship, to selected students. Eligible students must be in receipt of a four-year Ph.D. scholarship from the Chinese Scholarship Council, been recommended by the CGSR's partner institutions, adn meet the admission requirements of the U of S.

This initiative is the result of a triumvirate partnership framework - partnering Chinese universities, the CGSR and the U of S academic units, which will receive the students. The CGSR will be accepting applications of recommended students, from their Chinese partner universities until January 4, 2010. For further details check the U of S-China Doctoral Scholar Partnership Program Guidelines and Application Procedures.
