Three UofS Students Awarded Prestigious Vanier Scholarships

Three University of Saskatchewan PhD students have been awarded the Vanier Graduate Scholarship, a highly competitive and prestigious scholarship for top-tier students pursuing doctoral studies in Canada. The UofS students were among 174 scholars from Canada and around the world who have been awarded $50,000 a year, for up to three years to study at one of Canada’s universities. The announcement was made by Industry Minister Tony Clement on May 13th in Ottawa.

“If you want Canada’s researchers to be leaders you need to encourage them and retain them. This scholarship is an important way to do that,” says one UofS Vanier recipient Chantel Krakowetz, a PhD student in the department of biology.

Launched in 2009, the Vanier provides fully funded graduate study and research opportunities for students in Canada in a wide range of disciplines, and is administered by Canada’s three federal research granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

CIHR Vanier recipient Channakeshava Umeshappa, a PhD student in oncology, and SSHRC Vanier recipient Courtney Fidler, a PhD student in geography and planning, join Krakowetz as the UofS awardees for 2010.
