Policy Change on Course Limits for Non-Degree Students (posted October 14, 2009)

Previously, non-graduate students were only able to take six credit units of graduate classes without being enrolled in College of Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR). CGSR recognizes that programs leading to a graduate degree must incorporate the academic engagement of a student in a clearly defined course of studies that is mentored and guided by a faculty supervisor. However, the College also recognizes an emerging need to support life-long learning and professional development at the graduate level. On October 8, 2009, Graduate Council approved a policy revision, which removed the limits on the number of courses that an individual student may take on a non-degree basis.

Both domestic and international exchange students may take graduate courses for credit without being enrolled in a specific degree program. Potential students may be admitted on a non-degree basis if they meet the minimum entrance requirements for a Postgraduate Diploma, meet English proficiency requirements, and are recommended by the academic unit offering the course(s) of interest. Students subsequently accepted into a graduate degree program will only receive credit for no more than six credit units of previously taken courses, on the basis of recommendation by the academic unit offering the graduate program. Granting credit for courses taken on a non-degree basis may affect the time available for degree completion, as the start date of a degree program is the earliest date of registration in a course credited toward the degree requirements.
