Ph.D. Opportunity in Hydraulic Engineering in the Area of Scour and Erosion

Posted October 28, 2009

The opportunities:

Both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are sought to conduct research in the area of scour and erosion.

The Projects:

The students will be working towards the goal of developing a reliable jet test for determining the erodibility of soils. This will involve better understand relationships for ero sion rates and shear stresses in cohesive soils, to look at the growth of the scour hole by the jet, to study how the soil responds to the jet, and to study how the scour hole changes the jet behavior.

Qualifications:

The students must have a Bachelor (or B.Sc.) of Civil, Agricultural, or Geological Engineering with a strong interest in fluid mechanics and erosion and sediment transport. Interested individuals must meet the minimum equivalent average of 70% before considering submission of an application. The ability to work independently and good oral and written communications skills are necessities. Proven ability to work in a team is also essential. A previous background in erosion and scour is preferred.

Starting Date:

The student is to commence work January 2010. However, the position will be open until a suitable candidate has been identified.

Stipend:

The Ph.D. student will be funded at a minimum level of $17,500 and the M.Sc. student at the minimum level of $15,000. Additional funding (approximately $10,000) is available from department scholarship opportunities through competition based on grades and teaching assistantships.

How to apply:

Interested applicants should submit a resume or CV, including list of publications if available, and description of interest in the project to Dr. Kerry Mazurek at Kerry.Mazurek@usask.ca
