The Project:
The successful applicant will be actively involved in investigative studies pertaining to emerging and reemerging diseases that are of current interest and relevance to the Canadian pork industry. Presently, two initiatives are prioritized but flexibility will be worked into the position to allow the candidate to investigate new initiatives as they materialize provided they fall within the mandate of the Canadian Swine Health Board. The position will involve on-farm work to determine the epidemiology and risk factors associated with such conditions, as well as the subsequent microbiologic and molecular analysis of samples obtained from affected and non-affected animals. The successful applicant will have access to mentors with expertise in a wide range of specialties pertaining to emerging infectious disease investigation, including but not limited to epidemiology, molecular biology, bacteriology, virology and pathology. There will be opportunity to travel to pork production units in western Canada, and establish networks with other researchers/academics, field veterinarians, producers and pork industry representatives.
The successful applicant will be involved with all aspects of research from study design, grant writing, sample and data, laboratory analysis, assay development, statistical analyses, presentation of results, and publication of scientific reports and manuscripts. Teaching opportunities would be available for those who are interested in gaining such experience.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate shall have demonstrated the potential to excel in their chosen field of animal disease research or immunology. Experience working with pigs is a valued asset. Research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, virology or immunology is necessary. A basic understanding of epidemiologic and statistical techniques is required. The applicant must exhibit excellent organizational ability, analytical and problem-solving skills, and an ability to complete work assignments independently. A track record of first-author publications in peer-review journals and previous experience with grant writing is an asset. Competent English written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
Initially, this position is offered for a one year term, with the possibility of extension up to March 31, 2013 based upon satisfactory performance. It is open to all applicants with a PhD in any animal disease related field, but preference will be given to those with veterinary degrees and with those with experience in pigs.
