Research Opportunities in Pharmacy & Nutrition
Posted June 17, 2011
The Project:
We are investigating:
- How nutritional status can influence the extent of brain damage and recovery that occurs following stroke.
See: http://www.usask.ca/pharmacy-nutrition/directory/details.php?id=388
- The use of synchrotron technology (x-ray fluorescence) to map changes in brain iron and sulfur after stroke with the goals of guiding the development of biomarkers of stroke pathology, gaining insight into current neuroprotective treatments, and aiding in designing novel treatment strategies.
See: http://www.medicine.usask.ca/research/smi/.
Examples of Specific Projects:
-
Investigate in an animal model of stroke if protein-energy malnutrition that develops following stroke interferes with brain recovery and rehabilitation; this is gauged by assessing functional outcome (by behavioural tests) and studying neuroplasticity mechanisms.
- Study the temporal and spatial pattern of brain sulfur and its chemistry in response to stroke and potential treatments, including nutritional intervention.
- Evaluate the mechanistic role of iron in the neuroprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning in an animal model of stroke.
Qualifications:
Applicants applying for graduate studies (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) must have a Bachelor of Science degree with specialization in a relevant discipline. Preference will be given to those who have obtained a cumulative average of at least 80% over the last 60 credit units of the baccalaureate program.
Applicants applying for postdoctoral studies must have recently completed a Ph.D. and have a strong publication record.
