Masters Opportunity in Animal & Poultry Science

The Project:
The animal industry remains an important part of recycling nutrients in the food chain by converting material not consumed directly by humans into high quality food. An example is the recycling, as feed for animals, of co-products derived from processing wheat and canola for biofuel. This project is designed to add value to these co-products that will contribute to the processing industry's ability to remain competitive and also improve the economics of the animal industry by improving feed value. The present proposal will assess the nutritional value of co-products, in turkey diets, of the two most common biofuels produced in Canada, ethanol and biodiesel. Specifically the focus will be on wheat dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS), high protein canola isolates and crude glycerol. As commercial turkey diets are pelleted it is also important to understand the interaction between co-product source (and level of inclusion) and the various processing conditions employed during pelleting on pellet quality. In addition it is of interest to understand if processing of a product with lower amino acid digestibility (wheat DDGS) can increase the value of the co-products to the animal industry by improving the availability and consistency of nutrient availability. If the amino acid utilization can be improved by processing and/or enzymes then feed value is increased, and excretion of undigested nitrogen reduced.

Other Information:
Information concerning the Department of Animal and Poultry Science is available at the Department website: www.usask.ca/departments.php/. All application material must be directed toward the supervisor/faculty member in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science who has indicated interest in your application and has indicated that there is appropriate funding available.

Please ensure that all of these documents are sent directly to the faculty member who has indicated interest in your application. Every year this department must decline many applications for graduate studies because of limited financial resources available. Award of an external scholarship would greatly enhance the likelihood of acceptance into a graduate program. The department encourages applicants to make every effort to secure scholarships.

Please access the website www.usask.ca/cgsr for information on how to submit your on-line application for graduate studies (Quick Links - How to Apply). The procedure for registering on-line is detailed (Application Checklist). Access "Forms for Prospective Students" to download GSR101 Confidential Letter of Recommendation - to forward to the people you have asked for letters of reference. Information on potential sources of financial assistance/scholarships can be found on this website.
