Out of sight, out of mind: the cook in the Pompeian domus

Through an examination of the location of cooking space within the overall plans of a selection of smaller and larger Pompeian domus, with particular focus on the relationship between the kitchen and dining room, this presentation explores the reasons for the out-of-the-way positioning of the kitchen. While in the smaller domus, separation of cooking and eating space is unlikely to be great, in structures such as the Casa del Menandro, the distance between the two suggests that those in the lavish dining rooms enjoying what the cook has created will neither see, hear, nor smell anything of its preparation.
