Former U of S student, Nobel winner dies

Henry Taube, a native of Neudorf, Sask., alumnus of the University of
Saskatchewan and winner of the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1983, died
Nov. 16 at his home on California’s Stanford University campus.
He was 89.
Taube attended high school at Luther College in Regina before beginning
his university career in Saskatoon. He received both a BS and an MS degree
from the U of S, in 1935 and 1937 respectively, before traveling to the
University of California at Berkeley to do his PhD. Taube became a naturalized
U.S. citizen in 1942.
His teaching career took him from Berkeley to Cornell University, the
University of Chicago and finally to Stanford where he served as chair
of the Department of Chemistry from 1972-74 and 1978-79.
Among Taube’s many awards were two Guggenheim Fellowships, the U.S.
National Medal of Science, the Allied Chemical Award for Excellence in
Graduate Teaching and Innovative Science as well as honorary degrees from
institutions around the world.
He won the Nobel Prize for his study of inorganic reactions in solution.
