Butler |
Lorna Butler, a professor in both the School of Nursing at Dalhousie University and the Department of Urology at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, has been appointed Dean of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan.
The Board of Governors approved the appointment Nov. 8. Butler will begin a five-year renewable term July 1, 2007.
Butler earned a Masters degree in medical-surgical nursing from Dalhousie in 1987, and a PhD in statistics and ethics in 1995 from the University of Toronto. She joined the School of Nursing at Dalhousie in 1999, becoming a full professor in 2004 but dedicating one-third of her time to research in the clinical practice setting at the QE II centre. This arrangement led to her appointment as an assistant professor in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine for inter-disciplinary research and resident training in socio-behavioural research.
While maintaining a clinically based research focus in oncology, Butler supervises graduate students and student practicums, and teaches classes from the undergraduate to PhD level.

Rhodes |
The Board of Governors also confirmed the reappointment of two deans at its recent meeting.
On July 1, 2007, Chuck Rhodes will begin his second five-year term as Dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). Rhodes earned both a BSc and DVM from the University of Minnesota as well as an MSc from Iowa State University. He joined the WCVM faculty more than 30 years ago and has served as professor of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, head of the Department of Herd Medicine and Theriogenology, Associate Dean of Research, and Acting Dean of the college.
In announcing the re-appointment, Provost Michael Atkinson said dean of the WCVM is “an important and unique position at the University of Saskatchewan, in the province, and in the country.” He went on to praise Rhodes’ work in several areas, including re-negotiating the college’s Inter-Provincial Funding Agreement, heading the college’s infrastructure project, and building relationships with external college stakeholders.
