In response to requests to make continuing education more accessible
to rural and remote locations, CPTE has developed online videostream
sessions. These short (usually 1 hour or less) sessions will focus on
specific topics, and will be available to individuals for their own
learning, or to facilities for in-service sessions. Two videostreams, "the Physiotherapy Functional Mobility Profile" and "Meeting the Global Health Challenge - The Role of Rehabilitation" were released at no charge, to allow people to test the format and how it works, and to allow us to ensure we had solved problems that might occur with health region firewalls or other access problems.
We are now releasing a videostream for which there is a charge. This session was recorded during the Geriatric Health Updates session on June 12, 2009 and features Dr. Cathy Arnold, speaking on "Prevention of Falls: Importance of Exercise and Education". Many thanks to Dr. Arnold for allowing us to videotape her presentation to share it with those who were unable to attend the Geriatric Health Updates Day.
Fax or mail registration form to CPTE: fax (306) 966-1986, or mail to the CPTE
Office, 116-1121 College Dr. Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W3.
You will receive the website address (URL) and
login information for videostream access via email.
This test videostream will be available until the end of January 2010. At the end of the month, your ability
to login will be disabled.
Your password is for YOUR USE ONLY. Do not share this information with
anyone. Please refer interested
parties to CPTE, who will help them register and supply them with their own
password. The video-stream
tracking system allows CPTE to monitor use of passwords and when video-streams
are being accessed. This in turn
helps CPTE to determine usefulness of content and course format.
Computer and Technology Requirements:
Internet with high speed or light high speed is
the best for this format. We do not recommend using this learning format with
dial-up internet as all of the functions will not work properly.
If you are using a health region or educational
institution computer and cannot receive the videostream, check with the IT
Department and provide them the URL for the videostreams. It is possible that the common firewall
is blocking the videostream server or that you are using an older version of Internet Explorer.
This application may not work with Internet
Explorer 6. If you are running
Internet Explorer 6, you may need to upgrade to the latest version, or use
another browser, such as Firefox.
Ensure the computer you are using has speakers
(that are operational) and that the volume is turned up.
Once you receive your login email from CPTE:
Click on the link provided in the email. If this does not work, open your
Internet Browser and copy and paste the website address (URL) into your browser
address field. This will open the
Playback Interface for Recorded Lectures.
Enter your username and password as
provided. This information will be
different for each videostream session.
In the session:
Click on the title of the lecture in the column
on the left hand side. A duplicate of the title appears. Click on that second title, then click
on the "Play" button below it.
In the centre window that opens, select "High
Speed Version." Wait a moment
while the lecture loads. The time
required for this will depend on the speed of your internet connection.
Ensure your computer speaker volume is turned
up. You can then increase/lower
the volume of the presentation by using the little slider button immediately
under the picture of the speaker. You can use your computer settings to adjust
the volume as well, if you prefer.
When the presentation comes up, in the centre
panel you will see a video clip of the speaker, with a larger slide to the
right of the video clip, and a series of smaller slides below it. In the series of smaller slides, the
slide that the speaker is on will be highlighted with a blue frame around it.
That will be the larger slide that you are seeing. At this point, you do not have to do anything else
except follow along if you wish. The
slides will change as the speaker goes through the presentation. However, we recommend that you might
want to go to full screen for better viewing.
On the very bottom left of the black screen
under the lecture title, you can click on the button that says "View Full Screen" which allows you to
increase the size of the Power Point while still hearing and seeing the
speaker. Once in full screen view, you can select "Return to Panels" (light grey print) in the upper right hand corner
of the black screen, to return to the initial picture with the black background
and the visible Comments (course evaluation) section on the right.
Other navigational tools:
Underneath the video of the instructor you will
see radio buttons. You can use these
buttons to pause, stop, rewind or forward the speaker as needed. If you place
your cursor over one of the buttons (without clicking the button) a little tag
will come up to tell you what the button does. If you need to step away from the computer briefly, the pause
button is useful.
If you need to stop the presentation and
restart at a later time:
Before you stop, note which slide you are on
(there are numbers on each mini slide in the upper left corner. Then click the stop button.
To get back to the slide where you left off, under
the Power Point, where you see the slides in miniature form, use the scroll bar
to move to the slide you need and click on it. If you click on a particular slide, that portion captures 1
minute of content (even if the speaker reviewed 2 slides in that time, in the index
of miniature slides, you will only see the first slide). You may have to use the forward or
rewind radio buttons under the speaker to get exactly where you want to be
within that minute of content).
Within the full screen view, you can select different
viewing options in the lower left corner of the screen, underneath the panel
where the instructor appears. For
example, there is "standard view" (the default), "full screen" (large slides), "thumbnail
view" (provides pictures of all of the slides in miniature form).
Reminder:
after you have finished watching the videostream in full screen mode,
click "Return to Panels" (grey print at top right of the black screen) to
access the course evaluation. You
can press the Stop button at this
point to clear the central window if you wish.
Course Evaluation:
The course evaluation questions appear in the "Comments" section of the screen on the
right hand side, when you are not in full screen mode.
Click in the white box
below the question to provide your response. Responses to the questions will be
emailed back to CPTE.
We ask that
you answer the questions, as these comments are extremely helpful in assisting
CPTE with program planning.
If you have questions for the instructor on the
presentation you just watched, you can send us those as well, and we will
forward them on to the instructor for response.
Logout:
When you are done answering the
questions, click the Logout button
on the right hand side below the Comments section.
Remember you can go back in and view the video-stream again, or portions
of it, as often as you wish during the month that your password is active.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the CPTE
office at (306) 966-2043 or email Pat Tremaine or Stacey Lovo Grona.
