Thomas Yu, pianist, returns home to Saskatoon to perform in the Lyell Gustin Recital Series, Saturday, April 21, 2007, 7:30 p.m. at Third Avenue United Church. Tickets, $25 regular and $20 for students, are available at Darren's Music Place, Yamaha Piano Centre, McNally Robinson Booksellers, and from the Gustin/Trounce Heritage Committee (www.gustinhouse.ca). Yu, winner of the recent 17th International Competition for Outstanding Piano Amateurs in Paris, will perform works by Beethoven, Coulthard, Liszt, Dutilleux and Chopin.
*Thomas Yu, biography*
Thomas Yu, well known to audiences in his home city of Saskatoon, is a most versatile performing artist. His concert career has received much acclaim since he won the 17th International Competition for Outstanding Piano Amateurs in Paris in 2006, taking first prize as well as the Press Award and Audience Award. Following his most recent performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in Paris, the audience erupted with a ten-minute standing ovation. Yu's upcoming concerts include solo recitals in Tokyo, Ottawa, Washington DC, New York, Oxford and Innsbruck. In addition to his musical endeavors, Yu obtained the DMD with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan. He went on to complete his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and is currently completing a Masters Degree in Periodontics at the University of Toronto.
Thomas Yu has been featured on CBC, Bravo!, TV5 and France 2 television. He has also recorded with CBC and Radio Classique. He has performed for the Governor General of Canada as well as the Mayor of Toronto. In fall 2006, he received the Young Alumni Award from his alma mater, the University of Saskatchewan, as well as the Award of Excellence from the City of Toronto. Photographer Tony Hauser has included Yu in his book, The Power of Passion, which features prominent Canadians such as Adrienne Clarkson, Pinkas Zuckerman and David Suzuki.
A pupil of Bonnie Nicholson in Saskatoon for several years, Yu now studies at the Glenn Gould Professional School of Music in Toronto with Marc Durand. He has worked with pianists Robin Harrison, Julian Martin and the late Marek Jablonski. Yu has received numerous national prizes, including first place in the Canadian Music Competition, as well as the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association Competition. As a laureate of the 2nd Canadian Chopin Competition, he also competed in the 15th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland.
