Ergonomics is the science of designing, adjusting and adopting tools, equipment and work processes to fit the worker’s needs, not the other way around. Awkward and sustained postures, repetitive activities and high forces may over time cause discomfort, pain, and musculoskeletal injury (MSI) and reduced productivity. Through awareness of risk factors and making adjustments or modifications, MSI is preventable. In support of supervisors’ health and safety responsibilities WSEP offers in-house workshops on office ergonomics that provides guidance and tips on achieving neutral and safe postures for computer work. Better Gas Monitoring

The Biosafety course is mandatory for all employees, including faculty, staff, and students, who work with any biological materials at the University of Saskatchewan. This course provides training and hands on experience on: Biosafety policies and procedures, risk factors of biohazardous agents, exposure routes, selection and use of personal protective equipment, Biosafety cabinets, containment facilities, laboratory acquired infections and prevention, biosafety considerations when working with animals or plants, importation of pathogens or animal by-products, responding to biological spills, and the safe use, storage and disposal of biological materials. With the ever-changing hazards associated with research activities, it is important to ensure that all personnel are appropriately trained when working with biological substances in order to prevent exposure. Certification expires after 5 years.

The Biosafety Refresher course is designed for those individuals whose Biosafety Certification has expired after 5 years. This half day course is mandatory for all employees, including faculty, staff, and students, who work with any biological materials at the University of Saskatchewan. The refresher course covers all updates and reviews key topics in biosafety. With the ever-changing hazards associated with research activities, it is important to ensure that all personnel are appropriately trained when working with biological substances in order to prevent exposure. Certification expires after 5 years.

The Contractor Orientation Program is a mandatory, pre- employment, safety training session offered by the University of Saskatchewan, Department of Workplace Safety & Environmental Protection (WSEP). All contractors performing work on University of Saskatchewan property must attend this 1 1/2 hour session. The course is held every Tuesday from 8:30 - 10:00 am, in Room 140 Research Annex, 105 Maintenance Road. Paperwork begins at 8:15 am - with no admittance after 8:30 am. Fieldwork and Associated Travel Safety training will assist those engaged in fieldwork on behalf of the University incorporate appropriate preventative measures to reduce risk to themselves, their colleagues and the University, to aid in prevention of accidents and to maintain emergency plans to activate in the event that accidents do occur. This session will help to understand the legal requirements for health and safety, protection of the environment and demonstrate due diligence.

This course is designed to instruct employees on the BASICS of Fire Science, and the different classes of fires and fire extinguishing methods. Employees will be instructed in the proper use of a fire extinguisher and the topics of Flight or Fight and Life Safety. Weather permitting, there will be hands- on use of a fire extinguisher.

Hazardous Substance Awareness & Response Training. This is a specialty class for Campus Safety participants only.

IT Safety

This course is mandatory for all employees, including faculty and graduate students, who work in a laboratory and handle chemicals and/or other hazardous substances. (Employees working with other hazards such as electricity, heavy equipment, etc. should contact WSEP for guidance). The course will include training in: WHMIS, accident response procedures pertaining to chemicals, emergency response plans, the safe use, storage and disposal of a range of hazardous chemicals, the proper use of personal protective equipment, engineering controls and laboratory safety requirements. This course is supplementary to the Biosafety and Radiation Safety Courses. This is a full day course (8:30 - 4:30). Attendance for the full day is mandatory.

This course is mandatory for undergraduate students working over the summer break who work in a laboratory and handle chemicals and/or other hazardous substances. This session is identical to the Laboratory Safety class however only available for undergraduate students due to the high volume of new employees in May. This is a full day course (8:30 - 4:30). Attendance for the full day is mandatory.

Laser Safety is mandatory for operators of Class 3B and 4 lasers, and strongly recommended for all users of all other classes of lasers. This training is a prerequisite to work with lasers at the Saskatchewan Structural Science Centre(SSSC). The objective of this class is to classify lasers according to their relative hazards, identify and control the hazards, eye protection and provide reasonable and adequate guidance for the safe use of lasers and laser systems. Level 1 reviews The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 to help explain the structure and the responsibilities of occupational health committees. It discusses how a committee can become more effective. This includes hazard identification and controls, recommendations to use in dealing with concerns, and when investigating refusals to work under Section 23 of the Act. Attendance at this session is highly recommended for current members of the Occupational Health Committee and members of all Local Safety Committees. Those wanting or planning to serve on a committee are also encouraged to attend. Please note that this is a two-day class.

Safety Orientation

This course is offered to employees for the purpose of helping prevent job related injury and illness and to provide general safety training required under Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (mandatory as per Sec. 18 & 19). The course provides generic health and safety information and will introduce attendees to safety processes on campus. Site-specific training is the responsibility of the supervisor. This class is MANDATORY for all new employees.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods

This course is mandatory for those who ONLY RECEIVE dangerous goods. A person who receives or unpacks dangerous goods must hold a valid TDG certificate. The course is based on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Clear Language Act and Regulations as it pertains to consignees. A TDG Certificate (Receiver) valid for 3 years is issued upon completion of the course. Certificate must be renewed every 3 years by attending the class again.

This course is offered to any person who previously held a TDG Certificate for shipping dangerous goods by air/road. This class will review any changes made to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, and IATA. Attendees must demonstrate how to package and ship dangerous goods correctly. All classes are scheduled from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

This course is mandatory for those who offer dangerous goods for transport. This course does not include Class 1 (Explosives), or 7 (Radiation) dangerous goods. The course is based on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Clear Language Act and Regulations. This course covers shipping, receiving and transporting requirements of dangerous goods. A TDG Certificate valid for 2 years is issued upon completion of the course. All classes are scheduled from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
