Saskatoon is located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River at 52 degrees north latitude in the parkland between the agricultural plains in the south and the boreal forest in the north.
It has a population of 220,000 and provides services to both the agriculture and mining sectors; its central location makes it a preferred meeting location for provincial organizations that bring people together from across the province.

The Bessborough Hotel and the South Saskatchewan River are two distinctive Saskatoon landmarks.

Formal adult basic education classes are offered at Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology. Most of the Institute’s programs are one or two year trades or technical programs such as carpentry, electronics and nursing and Basic Education is only one of many programs offered.

Basic Education classes for grades 5 to 10 and 11 and 12 are offered on the third floor of SIAST.

Adults who want to enter Basic Education must take a pretest. This test serves to screen out those who are functioning below a Grade 5 reading level. Adults who do not meet entrance requirements can choose to get individual tutoring in the SIAST Learning Centre.
