Achievements
Following is a list of achievements of College of Education alumni, faculty
and friends that we are aware of in the past six months. If you know of

- Professor David Burgess, M.Ed. 2003 and Ph.D. 2008, received
the Thomas B. Greenfield Ph.D. Dissertation Award, in May 2008,
presented by the Canadian Association for the Study of Educational
Administration (CASEA) to the author of the Canadian doctoral dissertation
demonstrating the greatest significance of research problem, conceptualization,
design, and execution of study.
- Michael Chartier, B.Ed. 2004, an Educational Foundations Master
student was awarded the University of Saskatchewan Thesis Award,
in April 2009, in the category of the Professional and Applied
Social Sciences which recognizes excellence and original quality
in graduate student research.
- Professor Shaun Murphy received the Instructor of the Year Award
from the Education Students’ Society (ESS) in March 2009.
- Professor Geraldine Balzer, B.Ed. 1987 and Ph.D. 2007, received
the Grad’s Choice Instructor of the Year from the Education Students’ Society
(ESS) in March 2009.
- Professor Edwin Ralph, B.Ed. 1968 and M.Ed. 1976, Glenn Hepp,
B.Ed. 1980, and Wayne Dyck, B.Ed. 1972, P.G.D. 1977, and M.Ed.
1979, received Intern Supervisor of the Year awards from the Education
Students’ Society (ESS) in March 2009.
- Gordon Martell, B.Ed. 1991 and M.Ed. 1998, received the Alumni
Excellence in Aboriginal Initiatives Award from the University
of Saskatchewan Alumni Association in October 2008.
- Professor Angela Ward received the University of Saskatchewan
Master Teacher Award, in October 2008, an award which recognizes
faculty members who excel in teaching.
- Reg Nakoneshny, B.Ed. 1990 and M.Ed. 2008 has won the 2009 Exemplary
Course Award in the Annual Blackboard / WebCT Course Competition.
- Dr. Cecil King, B.Ed. 1973 and M.Ed. 1975 received a 2009 National
Aboriginal Achievement Award in the area of Education.
- The Hon. Dr. Lynda Haverstock, B.Ed. 1972 and M.Ed. 1977, was named
as a member of the Order of Canada in April 2008.
- Professor Bonnie Stelmach was presented a Teaching Excellence Award
by the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union in March
2008.
- Professor Twyn Armstrong, B.Ed. 1981 was selected as Instructor
of the Year in March 2008. This honour is presented by the Education
Students’ Society to their favourite instructor this year.
The award is open to nominations from all teacher candidates and
is voted on by the same group.
- Professor Shaun Murphy was selected as Grad’s Choice in March
2008. This honour is presented by the Education Students’ Society
to the professor whom made the biggest impact on them during their
time in the College. The award is voted on by graduating teacher
candidates only.
- Dorothy Allbright, B.Ed. 1991 and Jane Prosser, were selected as
College Supervisors of the Year in March 2008. This award, presented
by the Education Students’ Society, invites nominations from
those teacher candidates doing their internship and is voted on by
the same group.
- Professor Marie Battiste received a National Aboriginal Achievement
Award in the area of Education.
- Joseph Handley, B.Ed. 1968 and M.Ed. 1970 received a National Aboriginal
Achievement Award in the area of Politics.
- Gene Makowsky , B.Ed. 1993 played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders
in the 2007 Grey Cup where the Roughriders were victorious. Go riders!!
