Carrie (Caron) Berry is currently
a teacher at Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon. As a home economics
teacher, her interest in fashion was renewed with the implementation
and piloting the Clothing, Textiles and Fashion 10, 30 curricula
in practical and applied arts. After working with secondary students
whose creative talents in fashion design, clothing manufacturing
and fashion merchandising, she began searching for post secondary
options to recommend to her students. For her Masters in Education
in the Department of Curriculum Studies, Carrie is developing a curriculum
project: Fashion Merchandising: A Proposal for Saskatchewan Institute
of Applied Science and Technology.
As a recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award, Carrie will have the
opportunity to travel to New York City to visit two prominent and highly
regarded schools in fashion design and merchandising. The research
will benefit Saskatchewan students, home economics teachers and the
Saskatchewan apparel industry.
David O’Soup is a second year student
enrolled in the ITEP program at the College of Education. He is in
the secondary
education track
with English and Religious Studies as his teaching areas. David is
a member of The Key First Nation.
As a recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award, David will have
the opportunity to travel to Eagle’s Nest Recovery House in Shubenacadie,
Nova Scotia. This facility is an aboriginal treatment centre that
specializes in the treatment of youth with problems relating to alcohol,
hallucinogens,
narcotics, prescription and solvent abuse. David would enjoy the
opportunity to learn more about the process of treatment and rehabilitation
in
aboriginal youth at the centre so that he can effectively support
students who deal with these problems.
The Kirkpatrick Travel Award is administered jointly by the University
of Saskatchewan College of Education, the University of Saskatchewan
Alumni Association, and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation.
The annual award celebrates the contribution the late Dean Emeritus
Balfour Kirkpatrick made to education in Saskatchewan.
