Cari Anning and Darren Fradette are the administrative team at St. Anne School, part of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools. Darren and Cari are working and leading their staff and community in the development of a unique educational learning environment that will respond to the needs of the school, the community, and 21st century learners. The programming includes an inquiry-based learning approach from kindergarten to grade eight. Students focus on social justice and environmental issues, not only in the school, but in communities, collaborating with various community partners.
As recipients of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award, Darren and Cari will travel to Calgary, Alberta to visit two inquiry-based schools (Capital Hill School and Olympic Heights School) and an early intervention education centre, CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society) to gain knowledge and insight into inquiry-based schools.
Laurie Anderson is the Lead Assessment Teacher at the Newcomer Student Centre for Saskatoon Public Schools. The centre welcomes new students who speak English as an additional language (EAL) from kindergarten to grade 12. Due to the immigration growth in Saskatchewan over the past 3 years, EAL student numbers have quadrupled. The Newcomer Student Centre has supported the intake, assessment and recommendations for programming for newcomer students registering in Saskatoon Public Schools.
As a recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award, Laurie will travel to Vancouver, British Columbia to visit the Burnaby School District to research their programming. This will provide valuable insight for expansion of EAL services in Saskatoon Public Schools.
The Kirkpatrick Travel Award is administered jointly by the University of Saskatchewan College of Education, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association, and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. The annual award celebrates the contribution the late Dean Emeritus Balfour Kirkpatrick made to education in Saskatchewan.
