Kirkpatrick Travel Award Winner, 2012 - 2013

Gail Gardiner been selected as the recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award for 2012-2013.

Gail GardinerPlease accept my thanks once again for selecting me as the recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award for 2012-2013. Your generosity has helped me to continue my education in professional development as my position in both teaching and administration.

Throughout my educational career, I have worked hard to prove myself as a responsible and dedicated professional in teaching and now in administration.   Receiving this award means a lot to me, it has allowed me to attend some of the “best practiced” and promising avenues for education.  The Circle of Courage model, is currently being used world wide as a model for youth empowerment which is supported by current research, the heritage of early youth work pioneers and Native philosophies of childcare.  “The model is encompassed in four core values: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. The central theme of this model is that a set of shared values must exist in any community to create environments that ultimately benefit all.”

During the time there I attended a two-day workshop which introduced participants to an overview of an effective approach to leadership.   Situational Leadership II, states that instead of using just one style, successful leaders should change their leadership styles based on the maturity of the people they're leading and the details of the task. This training allows leaders to place more or less emphasis on the task, and more or less emphasis on the relationships with the people they're leading, depending on what's needed to get the job done successfully.
The last training that I attended was called “Deep Brain Learning Training”

During this one-day training, I learned to use

  • Practical tools to connect with challenging and disruptive youth
  • Methods to motivate reluctant learners
  • Strategies to restore bonds of respect
  • Pathways of the brain leading to trust and self-regulation
  • Key principles important to change in children of challenge
  • The Circle of Courage® Model’s four universal needs of children in all cultures: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.

All this training that I have taken will greatly assist me in my role as administrator.  It will greatly benefit the task of ongoing restitution in the area of discipline that our school will be administering.  These courses have allowed me to look at more training in situational leadership as well as more training with youth at risk.  I have really enjoyed my experience in this training and trip to Victoria, and once again “Thank You” “Te-ni-ki”.

The Kirkpatrick Travel Award is administered jointly by the University of Saskatchewan College of Education, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association, and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation.
