THE WESTERN RED LILY:
A MODULE FOR
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

This Western Red Lily module developed for the elementary classroom can be adapted to fit into some specific areas of the Saskatchewan Evergreen elementary science curriculum guide:

GRADE 3 - Core Unit = Animals; Optional Unit = Plant Structure & Adaptations

Foundational Objectives

The student will(TSW) discuss how plants were used by humans in the past.  (Lesson 1/2)
TSW understand the concept of native prairie plants.  (Lesson 1/2)
TSW recognize and examine Western Red Lily flowers (parts), leaves, roots, stems as common structures of most plants.  (Lesson 3/4)
TSW observe and describe the response of plants to environmental stimuli.  (Lesson 5/6)
TSW observe and describe how plants are adapted to environmental conditions.  (Lesson 5/6)

GRADE 4 - Optional Unit = Plant Diversity

Foundational Objectives

TSW develop a sense of respect for all living things.  (Lesson 1/2)
TSW reflect on the destruction of native prairie plants.  (Lesson 1/2)
TSW investigate the functions of roots, stems, leaves and flowers and their parts. (Lesson 3/4)
TSW discuss the response of the Western Red Lily plants to biotic factors.  (Lesson 3/4)
TSW give examples of how plant adaptations helped the plant to survive under certain conditions/climatic conditions.  (Lesson 5/6)
TSW explain plant adaptations based on seasonal changes, the availability of water, influence of sunlight, or differences in soil conditions.  (Lesson 5/6)

GRADE 5 - Core Unit = Plant Structure & Function; Optional Unit = Communities & Ecosystems

Foundational Objectives
TSW discuss the habitat of the Western Red Lily populations related to its community.
(Lesson 1/2)
TSW describe and discuss the process of pollination and seed production.  (Lesson 3/4)
TSW describe the habitat of the Western Red Lily population.  (Lesson 5/6)
