Day
One:
Motivational Set: Present student groups with a variety of lily plants to show
differences in flower shapes, numbers, and colors and leave patterns. Other
flower types can also be used for comparison purposes.
Because the Western Red Lily is a protected species, they should not be used
for dissection purposes. Many other lily varieties are readily available
at reasonable costs. Once flowers have been removed for dissection, the
plants can be planted in the school flower garden. If possible have one
lily plant per group.
Procedure: Lab – (60
minutes)
1) Put students into groups of 2 or 3. Give each group
necessary materials. Allow the groups to investigate the flower using
only the magnifying glass. Have them record their observation through
written notes. Students are to write 3 descriptive sentences about what
they have observed on their lab worksheets.
2) Instruct students to follow lab worksheet instructions
to dissect the flower, draw and label each part diagram and answer questions.
Day Two:
Motivational Set: Use your senses – Question students – (How
does your flower feel? How does it smell? What color is your flower? What
other colors do flowers come in? Why do you think flowers have color
and smell?)
Procedure: Read to Learn Activity (60 minutes)
1) Reinforce naming of each flower part using demo flower
or overhead transparency.
2) Handout – "Sexual Reproduction in Plants Sheet" – Have
students read resource material, and complete Part Two: Read to Learn Activity
sheet.
3) Debrief – Check for student understanding by discussing
worksheet questions as a class. Mini-lecture re: sexual reproduction
in plants may be necessary. Return to motivational set questions re:
role of color and fragrance.
Assessment: Formative: anecdotal observations
in groups
Summative: lab
