Department of Educational Administration Welcomes a New Faculty Member

Prof Jeff Baker(20130426) → The Department is very pleased to announce the addition of Jeff Baker to our faculty complement. A graduate of the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) at the University of Saskatchewan, Professor Baker brings extensive experience teaching internationally (in New Zealand, Taiwan, and Turkey). He obtained his MEd in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta, and is presently completing his PhD in Indigenous Science Education at the University of British Columbia.

In his recent role as Faculty Development Specialist in Aboriginal Programs at the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness, Professor Baker has been building relationships with the local community and offering workshops in Indigenous education. Well known within the College of Education at the U of S, he has worked to establish a pilot professional development programming in Aboriginal education for faculty and staff, looking to expand this programming throughout the wider University community.

Professor Baker formally takes the position of Chair in Aboriginal Educational Administration on July 1, 2013.

Professor Sheila Carr-Stewart to Receive 2013 Provost's Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Education

(20130415) → Head and Graduate Chair in the Department of Educational Administration, Dr Sheila Carr-Stewart will receive the 2013 Provost's Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Education.

Dr Sheila Carr-StewartThe Provost's Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Education annually recognizes an outstanding teacher who makes an exceptional contribution to Aboriginal Learning at the University of Saskatchewan. There are three avenues to demonstrating success:

• teaching aboriginal students
• teaching about aboriginal perspectives
• leadership in aboriginal education

Dr Carr-Stewart will receive an award of $2,000 to be used to support a project or scholarship in teaching and learning, and will be recognized at a Celebration of Teaching hosted by the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness.

Professor Emeritus Murray Scharf Receives Queen's Jubilee Medal

Dr Murray Scharf(20130121) → Former Dean of the College of Education, former Head of the Department, former Director of the Saskatchewan Educational Leadership Unit, and Professor Emeritus in Educational Administration Dr Murray Scharf received the Queen's Jubilee Medal on Monday, January 21 in Regina.

Since retirement in 2006, Dr Scharf has been an active member of the Saskatoon community, serving as Corporate Secretary for the Saskatoon Council on Aging and engaged in support of Rotary.  In his biography of Dr Scharf, Dr Rick Schwier, Head of the Department of Curriculum Studies, summarized a few of his many accolades:

Murray has received many honours and appointments over the years. He has received the University of Saskatchewan Award For Distinction in Extension and Public Service, the [125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada] Medal from the [federal] government for work in rural education, the [Saskatchewan Council on Educational Administration] Administrator of the Decade Award, and an honorary life membership in the International Congress on Education for Teaching, an UNESCO affiliated organization.

Graduate Academic Awards

(20130119) → The College of Education Academic Awards Day was held on January 19 at the German Concordia Club in Saskatoon. Several Graduate Academic Awards were received by graduate students in the Department of Educational Administration's doctoral programme.

Tracy Dollansky, Anabit Falihi, David Francis, and Taneisha Ingleton received the Education Graduate Bursary. Irene Oakes received the TD Bank Financial Group Aboriginal Graduate Bursary in Education and the Gordon McCormack Memorial Graduate Scholarship for Native Students. Both Oakes and Ingleton received the Saskatchewan Educational Leadership Unit Award. The Lownsborough Memorial Scholarhsip in Education was received by Dollansky, Falihi, Francis, Ingleton, and Oakes, as well as by Barb Gustafson, Natasha Hubbard Murdoch, Theresa Papp, and Cindy Sherban. Dollansky, Falihi, and Ingleton received the University of Saskatchewan Graduate Scholarship.

The Department would like to offer our congratulations to all of the students who received awards.

 

Department of Educational Administration Awarded Editorship of the Journal of Educational Administration and Foundations

(20121215) → The Department of Educational Administration is pleased to announce its success in a recent bid for the editorship of the Journal of Educational Administration and Foundations (JEAF).

JEAF BannerBeginning in January 2013, the editor's office will be transfered from its current home in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta, where our colleague Dr Janice Wallace has successfully built the Journal's prominence over the past decade. First on the agenda for the Journal's editorial team will be the implementation of a web-based presence in an effort to streamline submission, review, and distribution processes. The Department and the Journal look forward to future contributions of scholarly works by colleges and graduate students alike.

 

Dr Michelle Prytula Accepts 2012 Advancing Professional Learning Award

Dr Michelle Prytula(20121210) → Congratulations to Dr Michelle Prytula, who accepted the 2012 Advancing Professional Learning Award in Boston at the Learning Forward Annual Conference on December 4, 2012. The Award honours one individual for his or her contributions to demonstrate and document the impact and results of professional learning in education.
