The following is a description of the CERTEE Program. The program is no longer offered; however, this description may be useful as a reference for previous graduates of the program.
CERTEE students learned how to create, coordinate, and deliver integrated, high-quality outdoor and environmental education programs that emphasize human interdependency and connectedness to nature and the environment.
The program covered both the theory and practice of ecological education, focusing on pedagogy, the land as a teacher, knowledge of local ecological systems, the role of the ecological educator, and the realities of planning and evaluation. The program included an internship under the guidance of practicing professionals in the growing field of ecological education. Students could also gain additional certification in wilderness first aid and flatwater canoing.
Participants were able to complete the program, including the home-study and internship components, in as little as 8 months, or longer if they required more flexibility. Because students were evaluated not only on written work but also on group presentations and demonstrations of proficiency, this university certificate program also worked well for people who thrive on experiential learning.
