Castle Saint Angelo (Castel Sant’Angelo)
Castle Saint Angelo (Castel Sant’Angelo)
This fortress-like building was intended as a sepulchre for Hadrian and his family.. When Aurelian surrounded the city with a wall in 270, he incorporated the mausoleum within the precinct and turned it into a fortress. During the medieval struggle between the papacy and the noble Roman families, the building became a fortified stronghold. A high defensive wall, the Passetto, built by Leo IV (847-55) links the castle to the Vatican Palace. Alexander VI created a passage along the top of the wall so that the pope could reach the fortress from the palace in case of siege.
