"When I was about to graduate from high school I wasn't sure what to pursue, but I knew that I loved music. The University of Saskatchewan has allowed me to turn my personal passion into a career through the double degree Music Education program. Now I've taken my musical studies to a professional level on the concert stage while also learning how to inspire young musicians in the classroom."
- Ryan Cole, Combined Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Music in Education student

What is the combined degree in Music and Music Education?

This five-year dual degree program is a direct-entry program housed in the Music Department. Students audition to be admitted to this inspirational program and spend five academic years with the University.

Features of the five-year combined degree program include:
The U of S Advantage

Many full-time music specialist positions are available to young teachers who are entering the work force. However, some teaching positions involve part-time music along with other subject specialties. This two-degree program will train students to meet the challenge of a variety of teaching positions in a flexible job market.

Field Experience

Field experiences are an integral part of the education program at the University of Saskatchewan, and will enable teacher candidates to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge about teaching as they observe students and work with individuals and small groups as well as whole classes. The faculty team and field experience coordinators will engage with teacher candidates in practical field experiences, to provide opportunities for discussion about what is learned, and to understand in depth the role of schools and teaching in Canadian society.

The field experiences offered will not simply be a chance to practice ideas learned in university classes, but will support the developing understanding of what it means to be a teaching professional. Teacher candidates will learn from many teachers and support staff in school settings, from the members of a faculty team, and from peers. Teacher candidates will also be encouraged to undertake a range of teaching and learning activities in the field throughout the program, but especially in student teaching and the internship.

Student teaching will take a variety of forms from short school visits on a weekly basis to three week long teaching periods depending on the program chosen. Internship occurs in the final year of the program, is sixteen weeks in length and allows for deep exploration and involvement in classroom and school activities, under the mentorship and support of both an experienced teacher and college supervisor.

After their first year of study students are paired with a music educator in a partner-school whom they "shadow" in a full-time field experience for one week. Students observe and become familiar with the interaction which occurs in the music classroom. After each of their second, third and fourth years of study students are paired with a music educator in a partner-school in a full-time field experience for up to three weeks. Students are expected to assume a greater role in teaching and classroom leadership so that by their third year they experience full-time responsibilities and duties as an educator. In their fourth year students will be paired with a school and have the opportunity to complete assignments and assist in classrooms throughout the entire academic year. In their fifth year, during the first term, students are provided with a partner-school and placed in a full-time internship in an intensive field experience in both music and their second teaching area.
