Kirkpatrick Travel Award 2014 - 2015 Recipient

Karon Guttormson has been selected as the recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award for 2014-2015.

Karon GuttormsonKaron Guttormson is the K-12 Arts Education Instructional Consultant for Saskatoon Public Schools supporting teachers and students in fully realizing the curriculum outcomes in art, drama, music and dance.  She is a strong advocate of the arts as an interdisciplinary model for thinking and learning.

Karon has worked with and learned from teachers and students from Kindergarten to university level across the province.  She believes in fostering partnerships to support arts education as a fundamentally beneficial way of learning.  Flourishing partnerships include those with local artists, various local arts organizations, most significantly the Mendel Art Gallery and Persephone Theatre, and a new provincial alliance of Arts Education consultants.  She has written locally-developed and provincial curricula in Visual Art.

Karon is currently conducting action research with colleagues as part of a Stirling McDowell Research Grant which explores the following question: How does increasing visual literacy instruction impact student and teacher learning?

As recipient of the Kirkpatrick Travel Award, Karon will visit several educational programs in Amsterdam to study ways in which students construct and re-construct knowledge through art-full pedagogy and investigate innovative approaches to arts as community builders within schools and in the broader community.

The Kirkpatrick Travel Award is administered jointly by the University of Saskatchewan College of Education, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association, and the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. The annual award celebrates the contribution the late Dean Emeritus Balfour Kirkpatrick made to education in Saskatchewan.
