Applications 29. HANDOUT. Proverbial Echoes and the Point of Hœnsa-Þóris saga: "Ek ætla þar vándum manni at duga sem þú ert."Presented at the First Annual Session of the Willard T. Fiske Icelandic Collection, Cornell University Library, 51st International Congress on Medieval Studies, 12-15 May 2016.

Hrafnkatla:  ÍF XI.   3. 108. Sámr svarar: "Ófúss geng ek at þessu. Meir geri ek þat fyrir frændsemi sakar við þik. En vita skaltu, at mér þykkir þar heimskum manni at duga, sem þú ert.”
CSI V.   6. Sam Bjarnason reluctantly undertakes the case for Thorbjorn:
267. Sam responded, "I go into conflict with Hrafnkel unwillingly. I do this mainly for the sake of my relationship with you. But you ought to know that I think I'm helping a fool."
46. I want you to know that in my opinion I’m helping a fool in helping you.

Hœnsa-Þóris:ÍF III.   6. 17. Arngrímr svarar: "Þat var þegar ófyrirsynju,5 því at ek ætla þar vándum manni at duga, sem þú ert." Þórir svarar: "Eigi em ek orðsjúkr maðr, en illa uni ek, at þú launar svá mína gørð eða þat, þó at menn ræna mik, því at eigi er þetta síðr frá þér tekit." Ok skilðust við svá búit.     5var þegar frá byrjun misráðið (að þiggja barnfóstrið).

"It was really stupid," said Arngrim, "for I think to help a man like you is to help an evil man." "Words don't usually upset me," replied Thorir, "but I think it's shabby that you reward my help in this way or that men would steal from me, since it's no less than if it were taken from you." After that they parted company.
Ed. note.   Proverbial allusion. See below, 7. 20.

ÍF III.   7. 20.  Arngrímr mælti: "Ger eigi þetta, Þorvaldr, því at eigi er góðum dreng at duga, þar sem hann er; en þú átt við þann um, er bæði er vitr ok vel at sér ok at öllu vinsæll."
CSI. V. 7.
Arngrim advises Thorvald not to help Thorir, even in return for half the latter's wealth:
246.
"Don't do it, Thorvald," said Arngrim. "You're not helping a decent man in that one, and you are taking on someone who is both intelligent and honourable — and above all, popular in every way."
Ed. note.   Proverbial allusion. See above, 6. 17.

ÍF III.   7. 21. Þorvaldr svarar: "Þetta mun vera reyndar, at þú munt vera engi gæfumaðr, ok ill mun af þér hljótask; en svá mun nú vera verða."
CSI. V. 7.
247.
"It might be true indeed," answered Thorvald, "that you are not a man of good luck, and that something bad will happen because of you. But no that's the way it has to be."

Then Arngrim spoke: "Now things have gone as I expected. Bad things come from bad people, and I suspected that you would bring great evil, Thorir. I don't know what the boy said, despite what you babble about. It's not unlikely, though, that evil will be done. This matter started off badly, and it could be that it will end that way."
