it is said that no other trader sailing at that time was as rich as

ÍF VII, 311. Gylfr kemur fyrir sem hvorugkennt orð í
gömlum rímum í merkingunni "öldugangur, sjór"
(RÍMNAS I, 60, 196), en í orðtakinu merkir það sennilega
"alda, bylgja", skylt gjálfra. Frummerking orðtaksins
er þá "ganga í bylgjum". Í nútímamáli
