9:00am to 9:00pm - feel free to come and go
Arts 241, the Neatby-Timlin Theatre (formerly Place Riel Theatre)
The Department of English extends an invitation to the Saskatoon community to join us in our annual, day-long reading of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost. This year we have a number of guest readers, including Yann Martel, Jeanette Lynes (writer in residence at the Saskatoon Public library), and Mark von Eschen and friends from the local theatre community -- in addition to a number of colleagues and friends from the College of Arts & Science. Please feel free to join us for part of all of the day's readings.
Milton's Paradise Lost is a classic of English Literature and widely influential not only in literature but in popular and even theological representations of the Biblical story of the Fall and Redemption. The story begins with Satan and his minions in Hell assessing the aftermath of their expulsion from Heaven for rebelling against the authority of God and his chosen Son. After deliberating their next course of action against Heaven, the council agrees to Satan's plan to spy out the newly created world and its inhabitants for an opportunity to undermine God's plan. The result is the temptation and Fall, but along the way two angels, Raphael and Michael, are sent by God to inform Adam and Eve of events prior to and leading up to their creation, including Satan's rebellion and the creation of the world, and to counsel Adam and Eve about how to live, both before and then after their fall. For introductory information on Paradise Lost, electronic texts, and other resources, see SparkNotes and the Luminarium Milton page.
Sponsored by the Department of English, College of Arts & Science, Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, and Saskatoon Public Libraries
Admission is free, but donations to Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan or the Department of English scholarships fund will be gratefully accepted.
