students encounter a concept they find particularly difficult or troubleso

when it opens up a new way of thinking about the discipline. &#160\;Over t

 98) in the US called out research universities for failing to provide unde
rgraduate students opportunities to develop research and inquiry skills. &
#160\;The authors of that report&#160\;argued\, and much subsequent resear
ch into this topic has agreed\, that ALL undergraduate students MUST devel
op research and inquiry skills as part of their program\, and that the dev
 elopment of those inquiry skills needs to start in the FIRST year. &#160\;
Indeed it has been argued that students' involvement in research and inqui
ry might help to define what makes higher education higher (Healey and Jen
kins\, 2009). &#160\;Further\, others have argued that learning in a resea
rch intensive environment\, like the one here at the U of S\, ought to be
defined as a qualitatively different experience than learning in a non-res
 earch intensive environment (Wuetherick and McLaughlin\, 2011\; U of A\, 2

uiry has been defined in the literature\, and explore practical examples o
f how we might redevelop courses (particular those early in programs) to e
mbed the development of research and inquiry skills. &#160\;In particular\

indicates that engagement with OEP is an effective tool to support change
in HE teaching and learning practices.&#160\; We have found that OEP acts
as an excellent &#8216\;lightening conductor&#8217\; to identify underlyi
ng pedagogic conceptions and practices.&#160\; Making implicit models of l
earning and teaching explicit through OEP is an important step in developi
ng the skills and infrastructures needed to operate effectively in a chang
ing HE landscape. These benefits have also seen engagement with OEP move f
rom the edges of our institutional agenda to feature as a component of str
ategic planning. This session will provide an overview of some of UAL&#82
17\;s activities in supporting teachers to engage with OEP together with t
heir reflections on the experience\, paying particular attention to the af
fective\, cognitive and practical factors involved.&#160\; UAL&#8217\;s st
rategic direction in this area will also be considered in light of the bro
ad benefits potentially achieved through OEP.\nNancy&#8217\;s Bio:\nNancy
Turner is&#160\;Associate Dean Learning and Teaching Development and Head
of the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design at the Universit
y of the Arts London in the United Kingdom.&#160\; Her role involves strat
egic leadership of the Centre and its activities and leading and contribut
ing to institutional projects related to the enhancement of learning and t
eaching.\nThroughout her career Nancy has gained experience of strategic l
eadership of learning and teaching at institutional level as well as strat
egic management of virtual learning environments.&#160\; She has lead Mast
ers programmes in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and developed
contextual\, relevant and flexible continuing professional development for
faculty and staff who support student learning.\nNancy's teaching experie
