a:25:{s:11:"event_start";s:4:"1000";s:9:"event_end";s:4:"1000";s:13:"display_start";s:4:"1000";s:11:"display_end";s:4:"1015";s:14:"start_unixtime";i:1366300800;s:12:"end_unixtime";i:1366300800;s:10:"event_text";s:84:"%3A+Global+Institute+for+Water+Security+Distinguished+Lecture%3A+Dr.+Jay+Famiglietti";s:12:"event_length";i:0;s:13:"event_overlap";i:1;s:11:"description";s:2347:"Water+Cycle+Change+and+the+Human+Fingerprint+on+the+Water+Landscape+of+the+21st+Century%3A+Observations+from+a+Decade+of+GRACE.+%0A%0AAbstract%3A+Over+the+last+decade%2C+satellite+observations+of+Earth%E2%80%99s+water+cycle+from+NASA%E2%80%99s+GRACE+%28Gravity+Recovery+and+Climate+Experiment%29+mission%2C+have+provided+an+unprecedented+view+of+global+hydrological+change+and+freshwater+availability.+Since+its+launch%2C+the+mission+has+helped+to+confirm+that+precipitation%2C+evaporation+and+continental+discharge+rates+are+increasing%2C+that+the+mid-latitudes+are+drying+while+the+high+and+low+latitudes+are+moistening%2C+and+that+the+hydrologic+extremes+of+flooding+and+drought+are+becoming+even+more+extreme.+Importantly%2C+GRACE+has+exposed+the+human+fingerprint+of+water+management+practices+such+as+groundwater+use+and+reservoir+storage%2C+which+raises+many+important+issues+for+climate%2C+water%2C+food+and+economic+security.+Moreover%2C+the+GRACE+mission+has+enabled+us+to+peer+beneath+Earth%E2%80%99s+surface+and+characterize+the+worldwide+depletion+of+groundwater+aquifers%2C+raising+significant+concerns+about+the+potential+for+heightened+conflict+over+transb++oundary+water+resources.+In+this+talk+I+review+the+basics+of+how+the+GRACE+mission+observes+terrestrial+and+global+hydrology%2C+what+new+information+the+mission+has+provided+since+its+launch+in+2002%2C+and+the+implications+for+the+future+of+water+availability+and+sustainable+water+resources+management.%0A%0A%0A--%0ADr.+Jay+Famiglietti+is+a+hydrologist+and+a+professor+of+Earth+System+Science+at+the+University+of+California%2C+Irvine%2C+where+he+is+the+Founding+Director+of+the+UC+Center+for+Hydrologic+Modeling.+Jay%27s+research+group+uses+satellites+and+develops+computer+models+to+track+changing+freshwater+availability+around+the+globe.+In+2012%2C+Jay+served+as+the+Birdsall-Dreiss+Distinguished+Lecturer+of+the+Geological+Society+of+America%2C+when+he+lectured+internationally+on+our+changing+global+water+cycle.+He+also+appears+in+the+water+documentary+called+%27Last+Call+at+the+Oasis.%27+He+completed+his+bachelor%E2%80%99s+degree+in+geology+at+Tufts+University%2C+followed+by+master%E2%80%99s+degrees+in+hydrology+and+civil+engineering+at+the+University+of+Arizona+and+Princeton+University%2C+respectively.+He+completed+his+PhD+in+civil+engineering+at+Princeton.";s:6:"status";s:0:"";s:5:"class";s:0:"";s:9:"spans_day";b:0;s:8:"location";s:73:"Seminar+Room%2C+National+Hydrology+Research+Centre%2C+11+Innovation+Blvd.";s:10:"categories";s:0:"";s:9:"organizer";s:6:"a:0:{}";s:8:"attendee";s:6:"a:0:{}";s:9:"calnumber";i:1;s:7:"calname";s:13:"U of S Events";s:8:"timezone";s:19:"Canada/Saskatchewan";s:5:"other";s:0:"";s:3:"geo";s:0:"";s:3:"url";s:26:"http://www.usask.ca/water/";s:8:"sequence";i:0;s:5:"recur";s:0:"";}
