<description>Wed May 22 2013 10:00 am: Training Services Course List

 Information Technology Services is launching a new set of U of S Course Tools to replace the current PAWS Course Tools for the September 2011 term.
You will be able to perform all the tasks that existed in the original PAWS Course Tools as well as many great features for instructors and students:

		new flexibility to organize your online content;

		ability to access Course Tools from mobile devices (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, iPad);

		a tool to give (and mark) quizzes;

		an assignment tool that lets you return online marked assignments to students;

		a Grade Book to organize and distribute assignment marks to students.

	This seminar will lead you through the U of S Course Tools, showing you where to find items like announcements, adding files, creating links, emailing students, posting images and creating of hand-in folders.

	Additional help is available online using the complete Instructor Guide

	Materials specific to U of S Course Tools are available at Course Tools.

	U of S Course Tools uses Blackboard Learn, a web-based tool that provides the instructor the freedom to focus on teaching and learning techniques.This productivity tool can be used in all courses, from supplementing existing face-to-face classes to delivering completely on-line distance classes. It is easy for novice instructors to learn and use, yet powerful enough to handle the most advanced teaching needs.

	With Blackboard Learn, instructors can quickly and easily:

		distribute class material to students including locally developed files (powerpoints, sound clips) or web-based resources (youtube videos, flickr images).

		communicate with students, through email or class announcements.

		set up learning communities through student group work, discussions, blogs, wikis and chat rooms, so students can interact with, and learn from, each other.

		evaluate students through online quizzes, assignments, wikis, and discussions.

		support students on the go, with access from mobile devices and email notifications of changes in the course.

		simplify administrative tasks like grading, distributing grades to students, or identifying students who are having problems in the class early so they can get help.

	This session provides instructors and/ or course developers with the basic information required to start building a course within Blackboard Learn. If you have used older versions of BB Learn, this session will introduce you to the latest version used at the UofS.

<description>Tue May 28 2013 1:30 pm: The Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness Events

 With: When: Tuesday May 28, 2013 1:30 PM - 3:00 PMWhere: Murray 102 Presenter: Nancy Turner, University of the Arts, London
In most Higher Education (HE) contexts teaching remains a relatively private aspect of academic practice, not open to peer review or external quality benchmarks.&amp;amp;#160;&amp;amp;#160; This landscape is beginning to change with national student surveys, the scholarship of teaching and learning, professional development in learning and teaching for HE faculty, and implementation of development schemes such as peer teaching observation. This opening up of teaching practice is occurring alongside apocalyptic predictions for HE (e.g. blah).&amp;amp;#160; Whether such extreme predictions will play out will only be seen in time, however, it would be acting like the proverbial ostrich to ignore the significant shifts that HE is currently navigating.&amp;amp;#160; The need for rapid and continuous change has never been so pressing. While developments to date have improved teaching practices more needs to be done to facilitate ongoing enhancement in teaching and curriculum design. &amp;amp;#160;I propose that engagement with open educational practices (OEP) is one powerful way to achieve this.
Experience at the University of the Arts London (UAL) indicates that engagement with OEP is an effective tool to support change in HE teaching and learning practices.&amp;amp;#160; We have found that OEP acts as an excellent &amp;amp;#8216;lightening conductor&amp;amp;#8217; to identify underlying pedagogic conceptions and practices.&amp;amp;#160; Making implicit models of learning and teaching explicit through OEP is an important step in developing the skills and infrastructures needed to operate effectively in a changing HE landscape. These benefits have also seen engagement with OEP move from the edges of our institutional agenda to feature as a component of strategic planning. This session will provide an overview of some of UAL&amp;amp;#8217;s activities in supporting teachers to engage with OEP together with their reflections on the experience, paying particular attention to the affective, cognitive and practical factors involved.&amp;amp;#160; UAL&amp;amp;#8217;s strategic direction in this area will also be considered in light of the broad benefits potentially achieved through OEP.
